Retraite du Nord
Project Overview
Retraite du Nord is a transnational artistic research residency dedicated to collective vocal improvisation and circlesinging, bringing together 20 experienced artists from diverse European cultural contexts.
The residency functions as a structured platform for advanced artistic research, peer learning, and methodological exchange. Through daily collective practices, facilitated working sessions, and moments of critical reflection, the artists develop competencies in collaborative creation, performative practices, and emergent compositional processes. The project prioritizes process-based research over product-oriented outcomes, contributing to the professionalization and consolidation of the European field of vocal improvisation.
Retraite du Nord strengthens transnational cooperation by promoting artistic partnerships, knowledge transfer, and the circulation of practices across national borders. The residency model supports shared tools, decentralized leadership, and the sustainable development of networks.
The self-managed governance structure (autogéré) operates as a living laboratory for collaborative cultural production. The artists assume distributed organizational responsibilities before and during the residency, reinforcing participatory governance models, peer accountability, and collective care practices aligned with contemporary European cultural values.
The project contributes to the diversification and resilience of the performing arts sector by promoting intercultural dialogue, mobility, and research-based artistic practice at the European level.
